Transportation Analytics - IE Intern

This internship impacts the organization by assisting in the development and management of optimization and decision support tools designed to increase operational efficiency and reduce cost throughout UPS's surface transportation networks. This position will leverage industrial engineering techniques such as optimization, mathematical modeling, machine learning, database management, big data analytics, and problem solving skills to improve, manage, and design the decision support tools and models. This position reports to the Advanced Analytics Manager or Sr. OR Analyst.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Uses sound database management techniques and theory to assist in providing Sr. OR Analysts and Analytics Managers with clean and accurate datasets for project work
• Works with Sr. OR Analysts to define the scope of projects or processes
• Develops forecasting tools, optimization models, and other analytical simulations
• Learns and assists in the development of code and queries in SQL, Python, C# (C Sharp), R, and VBA programming languages
• Uses tools such as Microsoft Excel, Power BI, SQL Server, and Tableau Visual Data Analysis software to perform data analysis, assists in creating transportation models, and produces reports
• Works with Sr. OR Analysts to understand and develop model inputs, understand model parameters and business requirements, and ensure accuracy of report and model results
• Prepares executive summaries of report and model results for review with management to obtain approval of the output and process
• Familiarizes with current optimization decision support tools and processes to employ process improvement approaches to automate data collection, data modeling, analytical methods, or post analysis of solutions
• Assists in the development of transportation models and collection of data for projects, ensuring proper use of industrial engineering techniques such as optimization and forecasting, and performs post analysis on solutions to determine accuracy and the value that the model or process can bring to the organization from a service and cost perspective
• Leverages corporate data analysis and transportation tools appropriately (Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SQL Server, Python, R, C#, Tableau Visual Data Analysis suite, and Power BI)
• Uses appropriate database management techniques to properly query, pull, clean, and manage large datasets used for project work
• Reviews and presents proposed process changes with management
• Aligns with the project plans for Enterprise Transportation projects by working with the Network Planning Supervisor to consider resources, timelines, and deliverables required to achieve the project goals

Knowledge and Skills

• Actively pursuing or has graduated within the last 24 months with a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Operations Research, Analytics or Supply Chain Engineering
• Master's Degree or postgraduate degree in Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Operations Research, Analytics or Supply Chain Engineering - Preferred
• Database management and theory skills in SQL Server - Preferred
• Technical skills in Python/C#/R - Preferred
